What attendees would have learned had they been able to attend: This training is designed to equip attorneys with the knowledge necessary in order to represent survivors of intimate partner abuse pro bono in their Temporary Protective Order hearings through volunteering in our Intimate Partner Abuse program. In this training, we provide information about the dynamics of intimate partner abuse, Georgia’s Family Violence and Stalking Protective Order Statutes, special considerations when children are involved in abusive relationships and in litigation, and the process of volunteering with AVLF’s Intimate Partner Abuse Program. 2. Why should we consider volunteering with this organization now? The statistics show that 1 in 4 women (and 1 in 7 men) in the United States have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. In these uncertain times, where finances may be impacted, stress is at a high, schools are out, and people are encouraged to remain in their homes and limit outside contact, abuse has escalated. AVLF’s Intimate Partner Abuse program remains committed to assisting survivors in obtaining Temporary Protective Orders in Fulton County, pairing them with volunteer attorneys to represent them pro bono at evidentiary hearings when they are scheduled, and connecting them with resources to stabilize their families and keep themselves safe. AVLF is the largest provider of pro bono legal services in Atlanta, and our Safe Families Office (operated in collaboration with the Partnership Against Domestic Violence and Fulton County Superior and State Courts) is Through GAIN’s Asylum Program, attendees would have experienced 1) training from local experts on the basics of asylum law, as well as advanced topics in asylum (including recent executive orders and case law); 2) a mock individual hearing of an asylum seeker before a real immigration judge; 3) a panel discussion on best practices in immigration court. 1. What attendees would have learned had they been able to attend: A brief overview of immigration relief available to unaccompanied immigrant children followed by an in-depth dive into Special Immigrant Juvenile Status ("SIJS"). Why should we consider volunteering with this organization now? Immigrant victims of crime and persecution are a severely underserved and vulnerable population during these uncertain times. The Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network GAIN was created in 2005 because Georgia’s immigration courts were — and remain — the toughest in the nation, however access to an attorney can make a decisive impact on immigration outcomes. When you take a pro bono case from GAIN, you can protect the rights of vulnerable immigrants by securing access to otherwise unattainable legal representation. While the news is showing the grave situation of child asylum seekers being turned away at the border, there are still many children who are already in the United States who need legal representation.
