Lighter Weight And Added Stiffness There are generally more guides on a casting rod as compared to spinning rods of the same action and power. The reason is to reduce line and blank contact. With spiral wrapped rods, the line does not touch the blank just like in a spinning rod thus the need for lesser guide. With lesser guides, the weight of the rod is reduced and stiffness goes up a little. More guides add weight to the front of the rod (placed horizontal) and lesser weight up front means that weight is transferred backwards. Smaller Guides Here is a piece of good news for those who prefer smaller guides. With normal casting rods using semi micro to micro guides, lines will almost always touch the rod blank when the rod flexes. With spiral wrapped rods this issue is eliminated unless the rod bends all the way to the fore grip of the rod. Smaller guides also mean reduced weight. 133
