Back in the 1940s Penn called the
155 a “light tackle casting reel”
and that changed in the 1950s,
presumable mid 50s where it was
then called the Beachmaster reel of
which is part of the Beachmaster
series of which consisted the 155
(largest size), 160, and 165 models. There could be a 156 but no
one seems to be able to confirm.
It was one of the popular beach
casting reels during its hay day as it
was small (considered small those
days), light weight, with streamlined side plates. It also cast well as
it comes with a light spool made of
reinforced plastic. One issue with
the plastic spools is that they tend
to break. There are models that
comes with metal spools (155M,
160M, 165M).
