An important crankbait that should be included in every bass angler’s arsenal is a lipless crank. Like the squarebill the lipless crank is another versatile lure in a sense that it can be fished at any depth that the angler chooses. While this type of crank may not have a bill it has the similar action of most other crankbaits but with a tighter, more active side to side wobble. Lipless cranks tend to come into play during the cold fall months when water temperatures drop and the warm summer air is replaced with the cool breeze of fall. Fall fish will go to great measures to nab an extra meal to stock up before the winter freeze and the lipless crank is just the bait to throw when big fall bass are on the prowl. Since lipless cranks have no bill the angler can control the depth in which they believe the fish are biting thus making the lipless crank a deep and shallow water bass weapon. 171
