Jane Joseph?British Jane trained as a painter at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts in London from 1961 to 1965 and gained a Leverhulme Award for travel in Europe for the year 1965-66. She had the opportunity to work at the Graphic Workshop of Pécs, Hungary in 1989. Two Abbey awards allowed her to study and travel in Italy in 1991 and again in 1995. She lives and works in West London, where she is occupied with the urban landscape. It is this subject which propels her work. In 1999 she was commissioned by the Folio Society to make etchings to accompany Primo Levi’s If This is a Man, followed by The Truce in 2001. These prints contribute to a substantial body of work in small black and white etchings and large charcoal drawings. Subsequent publications include A Little Flora of Common Plants and Seeds & Fruits, both with Dandelion (study for A Little Flora of Common Plants) text by Mel Gooding, and Kinderszenen a collaboration with the poet Anthony Rudolf. She has exhibited regularly since 1973. Her most recent solo exhibitions were held in September-October 2013 at the Eagle Gallery (London) and New Hall (Cambridge). Her work features in a number of collections including: National Art Library (V&A Museum), British Library, British Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge), Whitworth Art Gallery (Manchester) and Yale Center for British Art (Connecticut). She taught at Wimbledon School of Art and at Morley College, London, for many years. “ The subject of common plants is derived from my overall involvement with the landscape. jane joseph Alder 2005 Signed 2001 Edition 6/8 Signed Framed Pencil on paper 18 x 16 cm Framed Dry point 15 x 10 cm Guide Price £450 Guide Price £300 Lot 47 140 The Art of Resistance?
