THE CASTLE
The Castle is a new-build home in Oakwood, Buckinghamshire. AFJONES helped realise an eclectic concept that blends medieval references, classical motifs and the rustic strength of Cotswold walling. Working across the full interior, coordinating stonework through the basement, pool and mezzanine levels, the team used Jerusalem Gold limestone, Bath stone ashlar, Cotswold stone walling and Clipsham elements to create a scheme that feels both robust and refined. The swimming pool features playful elements including a rope swing and a stone slide.
Carved elements play an important role in the project’ s character. Fluted stone columns line the pool, a carved Juliet balcony overlooks the interior, and selected details are picked out with carving that rewards close inspection. Each piece was fabricated in AFJONES Ipsden workshops and handfinished before installation, ensuring every carved detail met the exacting standard required by the design.
LUTYENS SURREY PROPERTY
This property is Chinthurst Hill, thought to be the first residential house designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Built between 1893 – 1895, and Grade II listed, the Surrey property’ s Bath stone is integral to its character, demanding a carefully considered approach to every intervention. Works involved the careful dismantling and rebuilding of sections of the existing house and garden walls, plus creating an extension housing a swimming pool that is built completely out of stone( which requires highly specialised expertise).
Overlooking the surrounding countryside, the newly built indoor pool is flooded with natural light through the triple height windows, creating a space that feels majestic and tranquil. AFJONES discreetly built in the necessary insulation and structural performance that any modern indoor pool needs within a building, allowing the architecture to remain understated and sympathetic to the original property.
