There are also simple treatments to help with the pain , like holding a cold compress , such as a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel , against your elbow . Tennis elbow braces can also help control the pain during activity . Your therapist or specialist can recommend the appropriate model and size .
Your GP may refer you to a physiotherapist if your tennis elbow is causing more severe or persistent pain . Physiotherapy in the form of stretching and eccentric loading exercises is the mainstay of conservative treatment . Massage and manipulation can help relieve pain and stiffness , and encourage blood flow to your arm . They may also recommend a brace , strapping , support bandage or splint to help in the short term .
Check with your GP first , but here are a few simple exercises that can help .
• Finger stretch - put a rubber band around your thumb and fingers , and cup your hand . Spread your thumb and fingers apart then back together . Repeat 3 x 3 sets , once or twice a day .
• Wrist stretch - Hold arm straight , hold the hand with the other hand . Bend your wrist down until you feel a stretch . Hold for 30 seconds , then relax . Repeat 3 sets , 3 times a day .
• Elbow curl - Place one foot in front of the other . Put the end of an exercise band under your back foot , and hold the other end . Pull the band up , and curl your arm toward your shoulder . Repeat 10 times x 3 sets alternating between palm up and palm down .
