However , the pretty red berry fruit and spicy , floral aromas give a wine of contemplation and pleasure that can be savoured around the table . The 2017 vintage is drinking beautifully – to get the best from this wine , I ’ d recommend decanting for an hour or so before serving .”
This extraordinary vineyard , with its 100-year-old vines , consistently outperforms its appellation . For this vintage , Jean-Pierre Guyon has opted not to use any new oak on this wine . There is considerable depth and tannin ; the wine is lush yet composed . Drink now to 2024 .

Its firm tannins are softening nicely , and pencil shaving aromas mingle alongside its classic St Julien core of blackcurrant . The magnum format makes this an extra special centrepiece , ensuring there ’ s enough to go around larger friend and family groups . I ’ d recommend serving it with red or game meats – perhaps goose or a leg of lamb .”
The 2000 Château Gruaud Larose is delicious now , but will continue to benefit from ageing for another decade or two .
