LUXURY RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT WINS REGIONAL AWARD FOR SOUTH EAST AT THE BIID INTERIOR DESIGN AWARDS 2025
For the past four years, the British Institute of Interior Design( BIID) has hosted its annual BIID Interior Design Awards, which celebrate the very best of British design across multiple regions and highlight excellence in both residential and commercial design.
Last year’ s winners included stunning residential designs, such as the West Sussex – Private Residence, from Studio 9 Design, winner of the South East regional category.
The West Sussex family home was sensitively reimagined by Studio 9 Design to support contemporary living, whilst respecting the building’ s historic character as a Grade II listed property, located within the South Downs National Park. The project reflects a quiet, considered approach to luxury residential design, balancing restoration with thoughtful architecture and interior interventions.
Originally known as Poynings Mansion, the house had evolved over time through a series of extensions that left the layout fragmented and lacking cohesion. Dark rear areas, poor circulation and limited natural light created a disconnect between the original house and later additions. The client’ s brief was to transform the property into a comfortable, contemporary family home that did not feel like a mansion, but a home that prioritised flow, comfort and calm over formality.
Studio 9 Design led both the architectural and interior design, choosing a holistic approach to reworking the building’ s internal structure. Circulation was completely reimagined to clarify the relationship between public and private spaces, ensuring each room had a clear purpose and eliminating functional overlap. Living areas were arranged to support daily family life as well as entertaining, strengthening connections whilst maintaining a sense of privacy.
