This hidden gem of a heritage house in the heart of Northampton is an ordinary Georgian terrace made extraordinary by the innovative genius of the Glaswegian architect , artist and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh . One of the most individual and creative designers of the twentieth century , Mackintosh is particularly famous for his earlier works including the Glasgow School of Art , The Hill House and the Willow Tea rooms . Commissioned by the thoroughly modern WJ Bassett-Lowke , Northampton born founder of a prosperous model making business , 78 Derngate was dramatically remodelled by Mackintosh in 1916 / 17 . Featuring simply extraordinary striking interiors , it was his last major project and the only house he designed in England . Open to the public 6 days a week .
