Grand Antique , a monochromatic beauty , rich in contrast and character , roots the provenance of these pieces back to the ancient Romans . Formed over millions of years in the valley of the River Lez , in the Ariege region of France , this is the most precious marble in the Pyrenees . From the Roman to the Byzantine Empires , this quarry and its coveted stone have adorned palaces through the centuries .
The most recent chronicled use of Grand Antique marble was by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann for the fireplace surround within his historic pavilion , ‘ The House of the Collector ,’ at the 1925 Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris . Thought to be exhausted , the quarry closed some years later . Having been fortunate enough to have sourced a unique new block – vast and of incredible quality – The Refined Workshop + Tollgard sought to celebrate this extraordinary material with an exclusive collection - a fitting new beginning .
To create heirloom works from this rare and fragile material , The Refined Workshop merged artistry and engineering via 5-point CNC machinery . Technical excellence allows for a visually impossible effect , with the slimmest of supports holding a monumental marble top .
