THE ART OF DESIGN issue 15 Avena Carpets > 20 Avena Carpets are a specialist Brussels Wilton Manufacturer; they were founded in 1976, when John Crossley and Sons, of Halifax, discontinued weaving the Jacquard Brussels Wilton looms they had produced for over 100 years. Avena design and manufacture the high quality, bespoke carpets in traditional weaves on the original looms, continuing in the passing on of specialist skills over the generations. Although tight lipped about some of the rich, famous and celebrity customers they have provided carpets for; there is obviously a market for this niche bespoke product. With recent installations such as Bolton Abbey and a number of Kensington and Eaton Road addresses, The company works closely with leading interior decorators and designers worldwide, many prestigious projects are included in their portfolio from The White House to the White’s Club. Their carpets can be found in the USA, Canada, Middle East, Europe, Australia and of course the British Isles. Having produced carpets for a number of high end restoration projects, they proudly name The Savoy Theatre, Brodsworth House, Windsor Castle, The Royal Physicians Hall, Derngate House and Wordsworth House having worked with the National Trust and English Heritage to provide historically accurate reproductions. Owner/Director Rachel Tighe commented “I am very lucky to have the support of a highly skilled work force. We are committed to continue our manufacture and supply of a first class product and have implemented training schemes to ensure survival of the skills required. We also take pride in the raw materials and have the pile yarns etc spun and wound to our specifications. We are members of the British Wool Board, The Textile Centre of Excellence and the Made in Britain Campaign. Not forgetting our duty to the environment all our carpets are 100% wool and any waste yarns are recycled locally into high quality underlay.” There is a large archive of contemporary and historical designs. A number of the historic designs are documented and they employ an experienced design team that use CAD technology to support new design work and the re-colouration of existing designs if need be. Yes you can create your own exclusive design or private collection. With an on site dye house, all yarns are dyed especially for the job in-hand.
