What is Accompaniment? 19 motherhood and fatherhood orient these relationships toward growth in holiness and communion. The Objectives of Accompaniment Though it takes different shapes, forms, and dimensions in different contexts, the apostolate of accompaniment is always oriented towards spe- cific objectives. Deeper Relationship with the Person of Christ Through the apostolate of accompaniment, the one accompanied grows in the ability to recognize the call of Christ in both the extraordinary and ordinary events of life, and with the help of their mentor, is equipped to respond more readily and courageously. Integration of Life In the apostolate of accompaniment, mentors assist those accompanied in the integration of all components of their life to compose a single movement towards doing the will of God. In other words, the role of the mentor in- cludes helping the one accompanied see all of the activities and moments of their life in the light of the Gospel, and intentionally orient them towards an active progression in holiness. Maturity of Faith Because it is a method of adult faith formation, the apostolate of accompa- niment is oriented towards foster a faith that is dynamic, explicitly found in relationship with Jesus Christ, and has a missionary character that wit- nesses to the love of God. Accompaniment equips persons to take an active role in their faith. Formation through Gradualness Accompaniment is a method that imitates the gradual unfolding of God’s plan of salvation through time, or the pedagogy of God. It seeks to form disciples in a way that is respectful of human nature, patient and under- standing, and builds on graces given by the Spirit.
