a more honorable death than

Mount Vesuvius erupts, destroying
Pompeii, Stabiae, and Herculaneum
and killing an estimated 20,000
people. This was recorded in a letter
from Pliny the Younger to Tacitus.

The Colosseum is completed; the funding for this
project came from the looting of the Temple in
Jerusalem when the city fell.
