ASSOCIATION NEWS | CHAIRMAN AWARD Allan Bauman Receives APDT’s First-Ever Chairman Award APDT charter member and former president Allan Bauman is the recipient of the first- ever Chairman’s Award, which recognizes an individual who has significantly impacted the work of the Association during a long period of time. Allan was the first APDT president, serving from 1995 through 2001, the longest stint in the history of the association. “Allan is one of our longest standing members who has been deeply committed to the APDT,” said APDT Chair Megan Stanley about her selection. “He has also had a positive impact on dog training and is well-respected in the industry. He has attended all of our conferences and sat on the APDT Foundation board for many years, where he also served as president.” Allan recently stepped down from his Foundation board position and we wanted to acknowledge and thank him for his many years of service and dedication for us, Megan added. “It’s truly an honor to be the first recipient of the Chairman of the Year Award,” Allan said. “APDT is a great organization and has had many dedicated individuals who have made a difference in making it the organization it is today. It is very humbling to be acknowledged as one of those individuals.” Allan’s love for animals began as a child growing up on an orchard. There was always a dog in the family, as well as other pets, such as groundhogs, raccoons, birds and other creatures that happened to appear. A career was born, however, in 1977 when Allan and his wife, Rose, got a Golden Retriever. Allan took the dog to obedience class and found he enjoyed the training and started to compete in competitive obedience. He achieved much success in competitive obedience and began assisting with instructing classes. In 1982 he rented an old hunting kenn
