APDT Board Announces 2018 Lifetime
Achievement Honoree
Pat Miller has been named the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient by the
Association of Professional Dog Trainers Board of Directors. She will be recognized
during the opening keynote address at the 25th APDT Education Conference and
Trade Show Oct. 17-20 in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Lifetime Achievement Award honors APDT members who have made outstanding
contributions to the association and the dog training industry throughout their careers.
“As a longtime member of this organization, I am deeply honored to be selected for
APDT’s Lifetime Achievement Award this year for its 25th anniversary,” Pat said. “I
have watched over the years as APDT has drawn the dog training community together
and worked to professionalize our industry. I am proud to have played a role in those
efforts and look forward to our work in the future as APDT continues to collaborate
with leaders in our field to move the dog training and behavior profession to even
higher levels.”
Pat, who has been a member for 22 years, was elected to the board in 2001, serving as president for two years, 2002-2003, presiding over
the conferences at Portland, Oregon and Orlando, Florida. She operates Peaceable Paws, LLC, Peaceable Pastures, and the Peaceable Paws
Intern Academy. An author and freelance writer, Pat has written seven books, beginning with The Power of Positive Dog Training in 2001
and most recently, Beware of the Dog in 2016. In March of 2015 she was named by Dog Fancy Magazine as one of “45 People Who Have
Changed the Dog World.”
“Pat has been an animal care, training and behavior professional for more than 40 years and her book “The Power of Positive Dog Training”
(2001) has had an incredible impact on dog training and is one of the most recommended books for dog trainers and owners alike,” said
APDT Chair Megan Stanley on the reason why the board chose Pat as its Lifetime Achievement recipient. “A long-time APDT member, Pat
is a strong advocate for the proper training of dogs and she is well-respected within the industry. She continues to have a positive impact on
the community as she is the training editor for The Whole Dog Journal.”
Member of Year Award Goes to Joann Rechtine
Joann Crogan Rechtine, CPDT-KA, MS, MPH, RN, CPC, has been named the 2018 Member of
the Year recipient by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers Board of Directors. She will be
recognized during the opening keynote address at the 25th APDT Education Conference and Trade
Show Oct. 17-20 in Memphis, Tennessee. She is the co-chair of APDT’s Education Committee
The Member of the Year Award honors APDT members who have demonstrated outstanding
commitment, passion and professionalism, and dedication for advancing the APDT as it
advances the dog training profession and advocates for the pet industry profession.
“It is an honor and privilege to receive the Member of the Year Award from APDT,” Joann said.
“Through the organization, I have met and learned from the leaders in our field, they volunteer
tirelessly to better APDT and the field of dog training. I look forward to continuing to work
with all the volunteers who make APDT the great organization that it is.”
According to Megan Stanley, APDT board chair, Joann’s dedication to the APDT and helping move the organization forward is what
lead the board to choose her for the honor. “Joann has been an active volunteer and member for some time and continues to impress with
