Head West for the 2024 Conference at Riverside
The 2024 APDT Annual Education and Trade Show Conference will head to the West Coast city of Riverside , California , Sept . 18-20 at the Riverside Convention Center . This was the location of the 2021 event that was cancelled as an in-person conference and transformed into a virtual one due to the on-going effects of COVID-19 . The three-day conference sessions cover all aspects of training : Animal Learning , Human Learning , Canine Behavior , Health and Nutrition , Business and Laws and Regulations . Those who sign up for the full conference may earn 21.5 CEUs that are accepted by CCPDT-KA , KSA , CBCC-KA , IAABC , KPA , and NADOI . Those who sign up for the On Demand sessions available after the conference may earn up to 30 CEUs . Full registration includes access to all of the conference recordings between 7-to-10 days after the conference when they are uploaded to the LMS .
The opening keynote address will feature Dr . Kathy Murphy , BVetMed , DPhil , CVA , CLAS , MRCVS , a veterinary surgeon and neuroscientist . According to her biography , Dr . Murphy graduated from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the United Kingdom in 1999 , initially working in mixed clinical practice before studying for two post-graduate clinical qualifications with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons – Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia and Laboratory Animal Science . In 2009 , she was awarded the Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship to study for her doctorate in Behavior Neuroscience at The Queens College , University of Oxford . She then worked in the United States as the assistant professor of neuroscience and anesthesiology at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York City , where her research into the long-term effects of anesthesia on learning and memory contributed to a change to the safety advice for the use of general an aesthesia in children .
After moving back to the United Kingdom in 2013 , Dr . Murphy held academic-clinical positions at the University of Oxford and Newcastle University while completing a residence in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia with the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia . It was during this time Dr . Murphy became interested in how pain re-models the nervous system and how that can manifest as behavioral problems in pets .
Dr . Murphy is now the director of Barking Brains , Ltd ., a neuroscience outreach platform for the animal behavior and training community , which focuses on translating neuroscientific information into practical and useful information for people interested in animal behavior . She teamed up with Behavior Vets in 2022 as Chief Scientific Officer . She lives in the UK with her husband , Elliot , a retired Search and Rescue handler and now a scent work and man-trailing trainer , and their four dogs .
The closing keynote will be Ken Ramirez , APDT ’ s 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient . In 2014 , Ken became the Executive Vice President and Chief Training Officer of Karen Pryor Clicker Training ( KPCT ), where he helps oversee the vision , development and implementation of training education programs for the organization . He has been a member of the faculty since 2005 .
