17 R l o ev o i ut Rights Ladies, there is nothing more detestable than the word “aristocrat.” As a proud Patriot myself, I cannot fathom even being associated with such a class full of Loyalists, and I can imagine that you do not either. With the topics of the Declaration of Independence and natural rights in the air, you cannot risk appearing like a supporter of the British. Let me reiterate: do not flaunt your wealth. Moreover, we are in the midst of a war for independence, and there is no room for cumbersome clothing. It is time to rid ourselves of high shoulder dresses, voluminous hoop skirts, high-heeled shoes, and broad-brimmed hats! Independence comes first, so let us spend our money on domestic materials whenever possible, so that our husbands out on the battlefield will be able to eat. Natural Rights : All of us have natural rights that are God- given, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As colonists, the British have despised of us those rights! If you want to live freely, I encourage you to support the cause of independence! “Don’t look like an aristocrat!” Don’t look like an aristocrat! You’ll look nothing but wealthy, which is the last thing you want in this era of change! No woman should want to appear so old- fashioned, so don’t wear hooped skirts! If you believe in freedom, then free your waist too: Try this skirt with small drawn gathers around the waist (much more comfortable!) and ruffled hem.
