Unveiling of the Sesquicentennial Welcoming Sculpture
The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club unveiled its
Sesquicentennial Welcoming Sculpture on October 15, 2016
which marks the beginning of a year of celebrations to
commemorate the Club’s 150 years of sailing.
Members and guests gathered for the celebration as well
as the club’s future generation of sailors who, with a little
assistance, hoisted the sail to unveil the sculpture underneath.
The sculpture, created by artist, John Woulfe took over six
months to create and has been made out of two solid steel
sails and a large spinnaker fabricated from 316 steel rods which
sits on a carved sandstone block.
The sculpture represents the area we live in, the sailing
community and sailing as a sport which encapsulates the
Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club’s foundations as a sporting and
communal club.
Katie Wins in Busan
As one of the most experienced match racing skippers in the
world, Australian Katie Pellew has been to every Busan Cup
Women’s International Match Race since the event started in
2008 minus one while her daughter was born.
On Saturday the 29th of October 2016 she went all the way
through to winning in Korea over previous two-time Busan
champion Lucy Macgregor of Great Britain, “Finally, is all I can
say. We’ve been here for eight years and we’re just so happy to
take it home today,” the Aussie skipper cheers out, praising her
crew of Alessandra Angelini, Jessica Eastwell, Kate Lathouras
and Stacey Jackson from the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.

Australian Sailing Awards Evening
The RPAYC congratulates the entire Australian Paralympic
Sailing Team who were awarded the ‘Sailor of the Year with a
Disability’ award at the Australian Sailing Awards on Saturday
29th October. Club Members Daniel Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch
are a part of that very successful team being the first sailing
crew to win back to back gold medals in the Paralympic or
Olympic Games.
Whilst Dan and Liesl were unlucky not to receive the Male
and Female Sailor of the Year Awards, both winners of those
awards, Tom Burton and Lisa Darmanin made special mention of them in their speeches for their outstanding year and
Paralympic Games campaign which saw them completely dominate the field on their way to gold.
Liesl was also awarded the much anticipated President’s Award,
which is given at the sole discretion of the Australian Sailing
President, Matt Allen. The Club is thrilled that Liesl has been
recognised for her outstanding contribution to Australian
Sailing.
In the Sports Promotion Award, the RPAYC’s IdS Program was a
finalist but missed out on the top honour which was awarded
to Nicole Douglass for her tireless efforts in promoting sailing
through her business, Adventures of a Sailor Girl.
