Congratulations for James Spithill
Two times America’s Cup winner and RPAYC member and Youth Development graduate
James Spithill has passed the America’s Cup onto a gallant Emirates Team New Zealand in
the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda.
All eyes were on James Spithill and ORACLE Team USA as the defenders of the Cup
coming from one of the biggest upsets in sporting history winning the 34th America’s
Cup beating all odds and winning from an eight point deficit.
Team Emirates, skippered by Olympic gold medalist, Peter Burling produced strong
wins in the lead up to challenge ORACLE Team USA and his race leading performance
continued into the final battles for the illusive Cup.
Heading into the final day with a big lead Team Emirates only lost the one race to Team
ORACLE with Peter Burling winning the Cup eight wins to one.
Showing his sportsmanship James Spithill was extremely humble on the loss and although
very difficult to pass on the oldest trophy is sporting history James congratulated Peter
and the team for their top effort and fierce competition.
Katie Pellew, James’ younger sibling expressed her thoughts on Facebook stating, “Tough
day for ORACLE but I have never been so inspired watching this event and the two
greatest teams in the world fight for the Cup.”
“Very proud of my big bro and all of the ORACLE sailors, staff and family. They put up a
great fight and were very humble in their defeat.” Pellew added.
The RPAYC and its Members couldn’t be more proud of James’ achievement with many
waking up at 3am to watch the finals. Commodore Ian Audsley commented on James’
attitude to the sport of sailing.
“James has always been a big sailor with small club roots, he’s humble and competitive
and does amazing work for his club and his sport and on behalf of the Club we’d like
to congratulate James on the 2017 America’s Cup campaign.” Said Ian Audsley. We
congratulate James and hope he celebrated his birthday in style. From all your fellow
Members at the RPAYC.
