Summer Championships
We are now midway through the Centreboard Summer Sailing season. The busy regatta schedule in the lead up to the
class National series is complete and RPAYC were well represented at all the events.
Sail Melbourne Regatta was held at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club in Melbourne. The first part of the week was for the
Olympic Classes and results were, Jason and Lisa won the Nacra 17 class, Tash and Annie were second females in the
49erFX, Josh 4th in the 470 and Jim 10th in the 49er.
At the end of the week the invited classes arrived to the threat of the biggest storm to hit Melbourne in years with
torrential rain and strong winds. The Lasers and Optimists Open were held ashore until late in the day on Friday. Around
4 pm they were sent onto Port Phillip Bay in a 20-25knot SW breeze and very lumpy seas and managed to get 3 races in.
The next two days saw winds well into the 30 knot range and no more racing was held. Some classes didn’t even get to
get onto the water for any races. But despite this many sailors took the opportunity to visit DFO and get started on their
Christmas shopping. The best result for RPAYC was for Fletcher Walters winning the Optimist Open fleet.
Back to Sydney and two weeks later was the Sail Sydney Regatta held at Woollahra Sailing Club. Again the Olympic
classes raced during the week on Sydney Harbour with Jason and Lisa winning the Nacra 17, Josh 4th in the 470, Tash
and Annie 5th in the 49erFX, Jim 10th in the 49er and Nathan 10th in Laser Radial.
The invited classes raced on the weekend and had great weather for it with nor’easters on the Saturday and soueaster
on the Sunday. Best results were Daniel and Fletcher 1st and 2nd
respectively in the Optimist Open Gold, Bayley and Olivia 2nd and
3rd girls respectively in Optimist Open Gold, Oscar 5th and
Sienna 8th in Optimist Open Silver, Wally 4th in Optimist
Intermediate, and Morgan 9th in Laser 4.7.
