XV Photo: Dave Christensen FEATURE Ingwalathi is the isiNdebele name for the sable antelope (Hippotragus niger), which inhabits wooded savannah in East and southern Africa. The genus Hippotragus consists of four distinct subspecies and while the Angolan giant sable - H n variani - is classified as critically endangered the common sable is a much sought-after game species and its healthy populations in Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Botswana probably owe much to sport hunting. In South Africa and Namibia (and Texas) there are huntable populations on game ranches. The sable is a large species, and can weigh from 330 to 600 pounds. In all subspecies, males are slightly larger than females. Female sable are chestnut to dark brown in colour, darkening as they age, while males are very distinctively black. Sable antelope possess ringed scimitar-like horns which arch backward and can reach over 1.1 metres in length in males. The longevity of the sable has been estimated at up to eighteen years. The species’ habitat is savanna woodland and grassland during the dry season, where they eat mid-length grasses and leaves. Sable have been known to chew bones to collect minerals. They are diurnal, but are less active during the mid-day heat. They form herds of ten to thirty females and calves led by a single bull. When sable are threatened by predators, including lion, they will stand their ground, and many of the large cats have died in these confrontations.
