Impisi is the Zulu word for wolf , but with the exception of the rare Ethiopian wolf - which may or may not be a true wolf depending on which taxonomist has the floor at the time - and small populations of grey wolves in Ethiopia and Egypt , wolves are not endemic to Africa and so the word is commonly used to identify the hyaena . Who has spent the night out in the African bush and will not forever remember the eerie call of the spotted hyaena ? Hyaena are members of the family Hyaenidae which is the fourth-smallest biological family in the order Carnivora , which means that they exhibit very low species diversity . Hyaena display traits of both canines and felines , insofar as they are not arboreal and rely on their teeth , rather than their claws , to capture prey like dogs , but groom , mark territory and raise their young more in the manner of cats . Hyaenas were long believed to be hermaphrodites because the female ’ s genitalia look almost exactly like the male ' s . The female ’ s pseudopenis is actually more like a tube , and mating is quite an elaborate and difficult production . Long unfairly regarded as cowardly scavengers , hyaena kill as much as ninety-five percent of their prey , and are not adverse to chasing off intruding leopard or lion . In Africa today , they are represented by the spotted , or laughing , hyaena ( Crocuta crocuta ), the striped hyaena ( Hyaena hyaena ) and the brown hyaena , ( Hyaena brunnea ). Because they are nocturnal and crepuscular - active in the shadowy pre-dawn hours - they feature prominently in the folklore and mythology of primitive human cultures where they are attributed to possess supernatural abilities . They are viewed with fear and contempt because of their associations with witchcraft and their body parts are used as ingredients in traditional medicine . Among the beliefs held by some cultures , hyaena are thought to influence people ’ s spirits , rob graves , and steal livestock and children .
