The weather conditions appeared perfect and the general consensus among most of the anglers was that this year would see some serious numbers in terms of size and quantity of qualifying fish recorded. How wrong we all were and the fishing proved to be very hard. Reports came in that significantly higher numbers of smaller fish than normal were being caught – not a bad sign for the tigerfish population in the dam, but perhaps an explanation as to why only 13 qualifiers (last year there were 42) of 500mm+ were boated and recorded. As always, with this species, there were also many encouraging reports of sizeable hook-ups without being boated, so the big fish were indeed out there! Only four tigerfish exceeding 600mm were recorded and the top angling results are as follows:1st Place - Cliff Reid (Team RobRoy) - 660mm - Winning R10 000, a R5 000 Gift Voucher from Rapala VMC and Roam Free, a free weekend for two at Shayamoya Tiger Fishing and Game Lodge, a framed and numbered ‘Striped Ambush’ tigerfish print by Craig Bertram Smith together with numerous sponsor prizes bringing the total 1st Place prize value to approximately R25 000. 2nd Place - Keith Duffield (Team Antalis Graphics) 650mm - Winning a R2 500 Gift Voucher from Rapala VMC and Roam Free, a numbered and signed ‘Striped Ambush’ canvas print and numerous other sponsor prizes bringing the value to approximately R6 000.
