The African Fisherman Magazine Volume 24 # 6 | Page 5

In this issue, we carry a remarkable story of a potential world record Nile Perch - an enigmatic predatory species which looks and behaves like a bass, but reaches mammoth proportions - released before it was properly weighed (pictured on the cover). Although that fish was caught on live bait, like so many predators, perch will take just about anything when in the right mood. There are some anglers who specialise in catching these monsters only on lures - spinners, stick baits and even plastics. Floating Rapalas in green/ orange/yellow colours seem to work well, with the easy-to-get and easy-to-work Rapala Super Shad Rap, especially in a bright colour like ‘Hot Tiger’ working well for perch. Kevin remarks “There is no agreed best lure, my friend caught a 21kg using a twisted teaspoon once!” How many other prime fish have fallen to innocuous items fashioned into lures? If you can imagine it, fish will probably eat it!
