Dear Editor
Thanks for the kind offer of a digital version
of the magazine - only one question and that
is what is meant by “digital subscription”?
Sounds quite complicated to me! Does that
mean picking it up on internet only which
means I can’t read it in bed, take it on trips
etc? I may be thinking along the wrong lines
so will wait for a reply
I think/know that I have been one of the
magazine’s original subscribers (and the
African Hunter) and should have copies of
most of the editions - it has been a wonderful
magazine and provided me with many, many
hours of pleasurable reading. Thank you to
all involved

Thank you Bruce for your support over the
years. Glad we have been able to entertain
you for so long. We are establishing a system
whereby regular hard-copy subscribers
receive a free digital version of the magazine
too. While it is true you cannot easily take
it on trips, it will download on any “smart”
device from phones to tablets and obviously
computers. The system is pretty automatic,
and once the new issue goes up, you will
receive notification that it is waiting for you
in your “bookshelf” account. Simply log in,
and start reading. For print subscribers,
we hope it will be useful as a resource
on your home or work computer, should
you be separated from your hard copy.
Also remember, that as we progress, the
digital version will become more and more
interactive with many of the adverts linking
to, or containing digital media, such as
moving pictures, sound, video and easy links
to services. It is all very exciting and easy
to use once you get into it. We hope readers

I have just recently returned from a visit to
the wonderful Hippo Pools on the Mazowe
River and feel compelled to highlight the
fact that the tranquil National Park (Hippo
Pools camp) in particular, is being seriously
subjected to fully mechanised pontoon type
gold dredging rigs in the middle of the
Mazowe River - +/- 750m from the cabin
sites.
I am not sure if you are aware of this problem
already, but if not I wanted to bring it to your
attention.
On our arrival – Saturday 24th August – the
colour of the river water, which should have
been crystal clear at this time of the year, was
actually unusually murky. Our immediate
thoughts were that illegal gold panning
upstream was responsible. However Sunday
morning (very early) what should have been
quiet time was anything but. I was woken
by an unbearable noise, and my immediate

thought was that the noise was from perhaps
road/bridge construction, upstream from the
camp.
Out of curiosity, I took the usual demarcated
stroll upstream to investigate the noise. To
my horror, there were two fully mechanised
pontoons (the size of kapenta rigs) in the
middle of the Mazowe River, with full
dredging operations in progress. The dredging
is done by bucket conveyor, complete with
rock sorting capabilities. Obviously gold
recovery being the main objective. I noted
that the operator of the “rig” was Chinese –
assisted by 3-4 local men.
I find it extremely strange that these
operations are being allowed to take place
within very close proximity to a National
Park and camp, disturbing the river system
for a start, the animals and the tourists who
visit for peace and quiet.
