Dear Editor Owen has just received Volume 23 No 5 of the African Fisherman Magazine and both Owen and I have had some really good laughs at what children say ( featured on the Letters page ). In fact , a youngster who was probably 6 years old was telling Owen a long and labourious story about a fishing trip he ' d had with his Dad , when it became apparent that Owen wasn ' t really listening . Angus then cast his eyes at Owen ' s ears and said . " Uncle Owen , I think that the wasps have built their nests in your ears , that ' s why you can ' t hear my story ." Owen wears hearing aids . We all had a good laugh , whether Angus quite knew what we were laughing at , we don ' t know !! Sincerely Dawn and Owen Connor Zambia
Dear Editor I would like to subscribe to the African Fisherman ( six issues ). I live in the U . K . but am an ex Zimbabwean and would very much like to stay in touch with fishing in Africa . We left Zimbabwe four years ago and the thing that we miss the most is the outdoor life and fishing . We used to do Kariba twice a year ( one trip was for Tiger Tournament - KITFT which I did for fourteen years ) and the other was a family trip on the Ceries . We also had a house at Olive Beadle and served on the committee of the Western All Species for thirteen years . So as you can imagine our hearts are still there and when I read a recent issue of your wonderful mag , all the memories came flooding back . Keep up the good work , you produce an excellent mag which is second to none . Regards , Rob Harris
Thank you for your kind words . Jacqui has sorted your subscription , and I hope we are able to bring a little bit of “ home ” to your doorstep . - Editor
Dear Editor All the best to you , family and team for the year ahead . I have just read your article on the disabled kids and what you guys did for them during your Junior Angling Fair - put a tear in my eye , well done to all . If there is any way I can assist with your next event don ' t hesitate to contact us . We do a bit with Jairos Jiri and you have given me an idea or two that could improve their lives . All the Best Terry Kelly Chairman , Nashua Zimbabwe officials checking vehicle papers . It could have taken us 30 minutes to get through if the Road Tax Official had change . It took him another 40 minutes to find R10 change . Police checks along the route from Beit Bridge to Bulawayo to Hwange were not as many as normal . We have been so hassled in the past by these Police with their disgusting arrogant attitude trying to collect as much as possible for government coffers that we reached a stage where we were close to not driving up again . On this trip the attitude had changed completely . The Police were either in the shade , doing what Zim Police do best , or they just showed us through without stopping or being fined . We were gob smacked ! The going was so good we made it back from the Zambezi in one day ! The Zambezi is typically high and running strongly . Tigers are around but the highlight is being able to sit in the shade on the lodge lawns and catch small bream in the high water also feeding in the lawn at our feet . We have also found some areas in the Deka River abounding with small Zambezi Yellows . The big jobs must be there , we just ran out of time to fish for them . Best regards Trevor Sinclair South Africa
That is indeed good news . Apparently there was a new committee ( which even has some private tourism members ) formed last year to look at the Beit Bridge problem with a view to streamlining the officialdom and to stamp out corruption . It is encouraging to hear this may be working . Long may their efforts continue . - Editor
Dear Editor I am a bow hunter in Zimbabwe and a very amateur fisherman . Are you aware of any policies that are in Zimbabwe for bow-fishing ( shooting fish with a special bow and arrow setup )? Information on bow-fishing can be found on Google search . Regards Oz
Hi Oz . Section 29 , paragraphs ( a ) and ( b ) of the Parks and Wildlife regulations state that “ no fi shing gear , other than a rod and line or hand line ” shall be used , but I don ’ t think anyone ever thought of bows – that provision is mainly to preclude netting . Spear fi shing too is allowed , so one assumes this would be very similar . You could query it with National Parks though . - Editor
Thank you Terry . It was an amazing day and very heartening for us all too . Finances permitting , we do hope to hold another event this year and may well give you a call . Well done on your work with Jairos Jiri too . It still amazes me how relatively little it takes in both time and money to up-lift those less fortunate than ourselves . Let ’ s all hope for a good 2013 . - Editor
Dear Editor Wayne and I have just returned to RSA from a week ’ s trip to the beautiful Sundowner Zambezi Lodge on the Zambezi River above Deka . We thought you would be interested to know that for the first time in years there is a definite improvement in the attitude of Zimbabwe border officials at Beit Bridge , including the incredibly hostile CID
YouTube host countless videos of bowfishing , follow the QR code on the right or simply look up bowfi shing on YouTube
