Vundu ( Hetrobranchus longifilis ) seem again to be making a comeback in the angling world . Over the last few issues , we have published several pictures and reports of vundu - both catches and picked up remains . While their population seems pretty stable in Lake Kariba where they attain quite a respectable size - as evidenced by Jacques Cormack ’ s fish on the cover - their presence in the Zambezi itself could easily come under threat if over-exploited . If there is no desire to utilise vundu when caught , anglers are encouraged to release them . Such fish of this kind of 50kg size can be considered to be very old by fish standards . As often happens , Jacques fish was not an intentional catch . He reports “ On the 15 / 10 / 2012 , the day before Tiger Tournament , I was busy practising my kapenta spot at Bed Island in Kariba . I was fishing with 12 pound line , baited with kapenta and a 3 / 0 hook when my reel started screaming . “ Luckily there were no tree structures below the surface and only open water . It took me an hour and 10 minutes to get it to the side of the boat and another 10 minutes to try and gently get it into the boat . “ I judge the fish to weigh more than 50kg but unfortunately I didn ' t have a scale big enough to weigh it , and I did not want to risk the life of the fish taking it back to weigh bay and therefore I released it as soon as I could after taking these photos . “ It was a great experience and I hope we soon see some pictures of bigger ones being caught . I am also glad to see that these magnificent fish are around once again .”
