Yearning for Free Time ? Too Much of It Could Take a Toll on Your Mental Well-Being
“ A new study finds that people may be just as unhappy with ‘ too much ’ free time as they are with too little . Apparently , the sweet spot for extra free time is about three and a half hours per day . People Tend to Incorrectly Assume That Psychological Disorders “ in the Brain ” Are Immutable and Innate
People are more likely to adopt essentialist views of psychiatric conditions after reading that such conditions can be diagnosed via neuroimaging techniques , according to new research published in Cognitive Science . In other words , mental disorders that manifest in the brain are more likely to be viewed as innate and unchangeable . The findings suggest that an intuitive bias can help explain why some people shun psychiatric patients and view their condition as a fixed trait .”

Tough Day ? Stress Can Predict Social Interaction
“ A new study published in the journal Emotion has found that greater levels of stress on a given day can predict decreases in social interaction the following day . ‘ Our findings show that people who experienced more stress on one day socialized less with others the next day ,’ says senior author Meghan Meyer , ... director of the Dartmouth Social Neuroscience Lab . ‘ This effect may persist for up to two days later after someone has had a stressful day .’ Previous studies with animals have shown that they prefer not to socialize with their peers if they were stressed the day before … To date , it has been difficult to determine if humans also engage in social avoidance as a result of stress , as researchers have not had the tools to effectively measure how stress affects real-world social interactions . Masculinity May Have a Protective Effect Against the Development of Depression — Even for Women
Women and men who strongly endorse masculine traits are less susceptible to depressive symptoms compared to their less masculine counterparts , according to new research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders that examined 40 years of evidence . Just 10 % of kids with ADHD outgrow it , study finds
“ Most children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactive disorder ( ADHD ) don ’ t outgrow the disorder , as widely thought . It manifests itself in adulthood in different ways and waxes and wanes over a lifetime , according to a study published Aug . 13 in the American Journal of Psychiatry . Study authors from 16 institutions in the United States , Canada , and Brazil said decades of research characterize ADHD as a neurobiological disorder typically first detected in childhood that persists into adulthood in approximately 50 % of cases .
