ANNA MARIA MORA : I live and work in Trinidad and Tobago , described as “ multicultural , and post-emancipation ,” and populated with Africans , Indians , French , Chinese , Syrian-Lebanese , British , and Spanish . Today , our population also includes people from other ethnic groups fleeing persecution , including Venezuelans , Nigerians , and Jamaicans . This multicultural society has created over years the “ haves ” and “ have nots .” Descendants of the “ haves ” enjoy inherited wealth , and they and their children enjoy the best that life has to offer , including access to the best schools , whether or not they meet admission criteria . Children of African descent find themselves at the lower end of the education system . I research avenues that enable me to work with these students to increase their self-esteem and motivation to achieve , among other objectives .
My research has led me to The Community Healing Network ( CHN ), https :// communityhealingnet . org /, which , along with the Association of Black Psychologists , developed a 27-page Family Care , Community Care and Self-Care Tool Kit , https :// bit . ly / 3aQyhN5 for persons of African descent to heal them in the face of cultural trauma . I also attended an Emotional Emancipation ( EE ) Circle Facilitator ’ s Training in Washington , DC , which equipped “ participants to establish EECs in their communities . “ EE Circles or EECS sm are ... support groups designed to help Black people heal from , and overturn , the root causes of the devaluing of Black lives : the lies of white superiority and Black inferiority .” As counselors , we must see the need for healing modalities to address the emotional damage . One such healing modality is the EEC sm modality .
