ADVENTURE + BREW
presented by
Richmond Hill Park (Asheville):
Located just minutes from downtown
Asheville, Richmond Hill Park offers disc golfers and
mountain bikers in Asheville an easy opportunity to
get outdoors and into the woods. The park offers
more than three miles of mountain biking on speedy
singletrack trails with just enough technical difficulty
to make things exciting. For disc golfers looking to
test their skills, this 18-hole course nestled in a dense
hardwood forest offers just such a challenge. While
dogs are required to be on leash, we do consider this
a ‘dog friendly’ adventure. After the adventure you are
a mere 2 miles from downtown which means lots of
local breweries. We like: Lexington Ave Brewery /
39 N. Lexington Ave / 828-252-0212 Directions
from Asheville: Take I-240 W to exit 4A/ I-26 W
to exit 25 at UNC-A and head south onto Riverside Dr
for 1 mile. Turn right on Pearson Bridge Rd. and head .5
mile and take a right on Richmond Hill Dr. Follow for .5
mile and veer right at top of hill through neighborhood
to dead-end at parking area.
Float the French Broad:
When it
comes to a relaxing summer adventure, nothing
beats a leisurely float and paddle down the French
Broad River near Asheville. Add in a few pit stops
at some of the local watering holes and you’ve got
yourself an adventure to remember. We recommend
launching at French Broad Outfitter’s new outdoor
space and bar adjacent to Hominy Creek Park before
paddling down to the River Arts District where you
can chain up the boats at the river access below the
Haywood Bridge and make the short walk over to
The Wedge Brewery for a taste of one of their
signature Iron Rail IPAs. From the Wedge, head down
toward New Belgium before finishing up at French
Broad Outfitters located walking distance to both
The Bywater and The Salvage Station - both fun spots
to grab a cold one and plan your next adventure.
Directions from Asheville: Take I-240 W to exit
1B (Brevard Rd.). Turn right off the ramp to an immediate
left onto Shelburne Rd, then first left again onto Hominy
Creek Rd. Contact French Broad Outfitters to book a
shuttle and reserve boats, tubes or boards. (828) 505-

Bike Pisgah (Brevard): The 400 miles
of mountain biking trails near Brevard have
always been appealing, but with the recent addition
of Oskar Blues Brewery and the Brevard Brewing
Company, sticking around for a cold beer after a long
ride became a lot more enticing. We recommend
checking out a few of the waterfalls of DuPont State
Forest while getting into the flow of the fast and fun
trails accessed from the Corn Mill Shulls parking area
before stopping by nearby Oskar Blues Brewery.
With great trails like Cedar Rock, Sheep Mountain
and Micajah Trail all in close proximity, it’s easy to link
up several rides into a big loop to create a custom
adventure that fits your fitness level. Directions
from Brevard: Turn right (east) on US 64 and go
3.7 miles and then right on Crab Creek Rd. Continue 4.3
miles and turn right on DuPont Road, whichturns into
Staton Road (5.3 miles). Go past the Hooker Falls and
High Falls Visitor Center to stop sign at the end of Staton
Road. Turn left and park at Corn Mills Shoals lot 0.8 miles
on the right.
Tuckaseegee River (Sylva): Take
your pick of either a Class III section with the
Tuck Gorge or the more mellow sections downstream
for a fun adventure in a beautiful river. The Tuck is home
to some of the best trout fishing in North Carolina but
also has some exciting whitewater that makes this a top
pick for those looking to add some excitement to their
float trip. After hitting the river, we recommend heading
to Sylva for beers at Innovation Brewing’s large outdoor
patio overlooking Scott Creek. Their great selection of
craft beers is constantly rotating and there is always a good
variety on tap. We like their variety of IPA’s. Directions
from Asheville: Take I-40 W to Exit 27 (Hwy 74 W).
Follow Hwy 74 W to Exit 85 in Sylva. At third light turn left
onto Hwy 107 S. Before you reach WCU, turn right onto S
River Rd. We like putting in at Locust Creek Park and taking
out a few miles downstream for a relaxing float with the
option to explore the newly completed Jackson County
Greenway that runs up stream of the put-in.
Disc Golf (Beech Mountain): Take
your disc golf game to new heights at Beech
Mountain’s mile-high course. Enjoy a lift ride to the top of
the mountain for spectacular views, unique tee locations,
targets teetering on small ridges, booming drives, delicate
touch shots, and a picture perfect “signature” hole from
this professional level 18-hole course. Afterwards, head
over the 5506’ Sky Bar that provides food and beverage
service at the top of the mountain. In summer, the skybar
is a popular place as mountain bikers, hikers and visitors to
Eastern America’s highest town relax and recharge. Open
from June to October. Directions from Boone:
Head south on US 105 to Tynecastle and turn right to reach
downtown Banner Elk. From there, follow signs to Beech
Mountain Parkway and navigate the steep and winding road
to the highest town in the Eastern United States.
