rafters alike, the Nantahala River is one of the most popular rivers in the U.S. Paddlers will enjoy 8 miles of Class IIIII whitewater flowing through the Nantahala Gorge, an area
revered by the Cherokee Indians. The word Nantahala itself
means “middle sun” or “midday sun” in the Cherokee language. With its crystal clear, Class II-III water, the Nantahala
is the perfect river to enjoy with family and friends. Trips are
offered year-round, seven days a week. Please note, there
is a minimum weight limit for children of 60 pounds
or 7 years old, which is strictly enforced by the U.S.
Forest Service. Directions from Asheville: Take I-40
West to exit 27 which is Hwy 74. Continue on Hwy 74 and go
past Bryson City toWildwater’s Rafting outpost at 10345 Highway
19 South/74 West, Bryson City, NC.
Take A Canopy Tour: Nantahala Gorge Canopy Tours (NGCT)
offers 13 different zip lines and 8 bridges. Recently, an additional two
ziplines and two more bridges were added to include platforms with
views of Clingman’s Dome, Fontana Lake and several waterfalls. Soar
out to the point for the highest platform, then on to the highest tree
with unbelievable views. One more zip takes participants to a bridge
where the final two ziplines await. A zipline canopy tour is a soaring and
gliding experience naturally fueled by a gradual elevation change. More
than a zip line ride, NGCT takes you through multiple ecosystems,
past hemlocks, into hardwoods and through a deciduous forest
packed with native flowering plants such as mountain laurel, dogwood,
rhododendron, giant Frazier magnolia, rare umbrella magnolia, silver
bells and many more. This is a great trip for families and adventure
enthusiasts of all ages. Directions: Nantahala Gorge Canopy Tours
are located on Hwy. 74 West, 12 miles Southwest of Bryson City. We
recommend Hwy. 74/23 versus Hwy. 19 for time and better roads.
