Las Isletas Lake Islands An eruption of Volcano Mombacho, thousands of years ago, threw up 365 rocks, which sedimented inside Lake Nicaragua and now form Las Isletas. The glittering archipelago of tropical islands is best explored by guided kayak or small boat from the shores of Granada. We pass boys swimming in the shallow surf and fishermen out on wooden boats. I can’t help but think of the bull sharks in the depths. Of the islets, many are private homes of the wealthy, eco-lodges and a luxury yoga retreat, Jicaro Island Lodge. Tours also visit ‘Monkey Island,’ which is home to a displaced troop of cheeky resident monkeys! Jicaro Island Eco-Lodge is one of Nicaragua’s best private island retreats. It features nine luxurious casitas in the most serene spot inside the lake, perfect for yoga retreaters wanting total calm and isolation. Accessible only by boat, this is a tranquil hideaway. Look out for egrets, swallows, kingfishers and warblers gingerly hotfooting across mangroves, muddy marsh and mudbanks. San Juan Del Sur: Sea & Surf Nicaragua’s most famous assets are its glistening vast empty beaches. Entire swathes of soft polished sand line the nation like a gilded trophy. The best beaches in Nicaragua are found in San Juan del Norte. A short drive from the most popular town in Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur, the North goes mostly unnoticed. That is the magic of it. My guide drives me just 30kms www.theaddressmagazine.com 441
