are like a backyard party. Birmingham Alabama’ s 75th annual football Classic is held in the heart of the city at the historical Legion Field. The day starts early in the morning with a parade downtown, kicking off a city wide convoy of the most immaculate donks, slabs, and foreign whips, off to the stadium. The hotel lobby becomes part of the social. The traffic jam becomes the car show and the streets become the runway, as the strip is laced with vendors and tailgaters by the thousands. Besides all of the excitement, the Classic gives a tremendous economic boom to the local community. With hood tax in full effect, everybody eats. My wife and I parked at Ms Mary’ s house, an 84 year old woman who beckoned us to her residence for $ 15.00, so I threw her a dubb. Ms. Mary, like so many others, watch the people and festivities from their porches with friends and family, while eating good and enjoying the sounds of the surrounding block parties. Are you surprised that we haven ' t talked much football? Well, in the last seconds of sudden death overtime, the Alabama A & M Bulldogs beat the Alabama State Hornets, while the sea of colors waved, danced and battled for bragging rights. To top it all off, your game ticket included a live concert performance by DTP Recording Artists, Ludacris and Lil Fate, with A & M alumni, DJ Infamous on the 1’ s and 2’ s, immediately following the game.
“ And I bet you never ever, seen a jet-black blonde! At the Bayou Classic, paint job, spice-dijon.”
The 43rd annual Bayou Classic, held in New Orleans Louisiana, drew a record crowd for 2016, as the Southern University Jaguars battled the Grambling State Tigers in the Superdome. This“ Attraction,” as they say, is the spirit of the city. From Friday night’ s Greek Show & Battle of The Bands, fans congregate in the Superdome, blazay in the streets and parley in New Orleans’ fine hotels, restaurants, stores, boutiques and many venues for live entertainment, sociality, and camaraderie. Canal St was bubbling, while Bourbon St was popping( literally), and all throughout the city, aint ' nothin that was stopping. The age old game brings people from all walks of life, of all ages, as everyone is tied into the culture. Even if you’ ve never been to college, you’ ve been to the Classic. Thousands gather in the French Quarter for an evening of whatever you choose in the Big Easy, but be careful. Tragically, the streets aint’ safe! No more than an hour after dining at the famous Deanie’ s Seafood Restaurant, a shooting took place, wounding 10 people, leaving one dead. Lord have mercy on us! Enjoy yourself in New Orleans but the best advice is to protect yourself at all times. Don ' t get caught slipping... Wait... Aren ' t we talking about football? Saturday’ s game was cool however, its Battle of the Bands that people come to see. Southern and Grambling’ s marching bands are truly of the finest in the land.( In my opinion.)
My favourite aspect of HBCU football is the tailgate. Nowhere else can you can live so well, while breaking a new song to over sixty DJ’ s in one day, hospitality at its finest! Since we’ ve matriculated from school to start our careers, build our families and pursue our dreams, we never forget the memories we shared with friends near and dear. After a weekend of reliving those memories with alumni, family and friends, we meet in hotel lobbies to say goodbye, until next year. Let’ s hit the Classic!
