Illumina Microgrid Feasibility Study Illumina is a biotechnology company specializing in sequencing and array technologies for the analysis of genetic variation and biological function . A power outage could jeopardize the facility ’ s operations . To prevent this , the firm was interested in islanding their existing electrical system . P2S performed a feasibility study to find options and costs for the following scenarios :
1 . Be able to continue running the fuel cell and battery storage system during a grid outage
2 . Be able to island from the grid without sensing any interruption during an outage ( requires load shedding ).
This feasibility study involved field investigation and compilation of energy usage data , campus loads and current electric rates . Data was acquired by reviewing existing meter data for demand and capacity of on-site generation sources . A feasibility report was developed to summarize findings of existing conditions , our proposed evaluation and our recommendations to island the system in the event of a power outage .
Port of Long Beach , Container Terminal Microgrid Feasibility Study P2S developed a comprehensive microgrid feasibility assessment and conceptual design of a microgrid at a major container terminal at the Port of Long Beach to increase resiliency and enable the transition to a zero-emission cargo handling fleet . The assessment included forecasts of future electrical demand , on-site generation potential , coordination with the electrical utility provider , conceptual design alternatives for peak shaving and islanding resiliency . Local , State and Federal , grant opportunities were identified to defer the capital cost of installation .
The proposed concept reduced dependency on the utility grid while increasing the onsite renewable generation sources , helping the facility achieve their sustainability goals .
