Cox Enterprises’ culture is unique — and so is our leadership. Our Chairman Jim Kennedy and CEO Alex Taylor represent the third and fourth generations of Cox family members to lead the company. In this discussion, Jim and Alex address Cox Enterprises’ progress in corporate social responsibility (CSR), the opportunities to expand upon its environmental and social objectives, and how the organization will leverage innovation as it continues to evolve and grow. Today’s Cox Enterprises looks a lot different from the company Governor Cox founded so long ago. Amid all that change, are there things that have remained the same? JIM It’s interesting that although the term corporate social responsibility didn’t exist when my grandfather founded the company in 1898, many of the principles he embraced can be found at the center of our CSR agenda today. He believed we had a responsibility to our communities and our employees and their families. These continue to be important considerations as we make decisions about the future of our company. The work we’re doing to improve our environmental and social performance is really a continuation of his legacy, which is one that we cherish. ALEX over the years, but at our core we are still trying to make a positive impact on the world. Our Purpose is to: Empower People Today to Build a Better Future for the Next Generation. Our CSR initiatives and goals are a conduit for our employees to engage in that Purpose. JIM Another important point is that we won’t meet our environmental and social objectives if it’s only based on what Alex and I and our senior executives say. Our employees are critical to achieving our CSR targets. They are a powerful force for good, and they are the ones who bring these initiatives to life. Alex Taylor reviews plans for EXLab, a comprehensive multi-year effort to reimagine the Cox employee experience across all our divisions. Governor Cox was passionate about newspapering, not because it was a great business. It was a tough business. He used it as a platform to make a difference in the world. We’ve changed and diversified, so much Cox Enterprises, Inc. 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report 3
