COX GIVING
“The Cox gifts are allowing us to greatly accelerate our
efforts to improve the lives of our patients and their families.
The MCI Empowerment Program presents an unprecedented
opportunity to fill the gap in research and care while developing
innovations that can be used worldwide.”
— Allan Levey, MD, PhD, Director, Goizueta Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center

The Cox Foundation is making investments in
programs that are reimagining approaches to
care and treatment — and expanding access to
quality care for everyone.
Quality Care at Every Stage
The importance of high-quality healthcare that
respects patients’ needs and communicates
with them effectively became personal for Cox
Chairman Jim Kennedy when he was diagnosed
with prostate cancer in 2014. After Kennedy
received care at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, the
Cox Foundation gave back by making a five-
year, $25 million investment in the hospital’s
patient-centered care initiative.
Patient-centered care is an emerging approach
that has the potential to improve outcomes for
patients facing many types of medical conditions.
Through this work, the Foundation has identified
another gap in the care continuum that we are
taking action to address. Mild cognitive impairment
(MCI) is a distinct early decline in memory, often
a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease. By 2050, it
is expected to affect 88.5 million individuals, but
more research is needed to understand how
best to manage the condition.

Grants totaling $23.7 million from the James M.
Cox Foundation and Cox Enterprises will bridge
this gap. The investment will help establish a
new program at the Emory Brain Health Center
to improve the everyday lives of patients with
MCI through effective, evidence-based treatment
methods. The program is a partnership between
Emory, the Georgia Institute of Technology’s
Institute for People and Technology and Oregon
Health and Science University. The research will
include home monitoring and a therapeutic day
program for patients and caregivers, the
outcomes of which could help millions of people
maintain meaningful and productive lives as
they age.
