Cox Communications and Waste Diversion:
How Good Gets Done
operations and local facilities teams to redesign recycling
collection systems. Partnering with product and
engineering teams, they’ve found new ways to reuse
electronic equipment like remotes — even repurposing
components in the manufacture of new devices.
Collectively these efforts divert more than 15 million
pounds of waste from landfills annually and generate
yearly cost savings of more than $12 million.
The work of Cox Communication’s (CCI) Sustainable
Solutions team, and of thousands of employees, is a
great example of how Cox is improving waste stream
management by evaluating and improving the supply
and value chain.
In just two years Sustainable Solutions improved CCI’s
waste diversion rate from 47 to 68 percent. They adopted
a number of tactics, including engaging warehouse
Twice a year we measure our waste performance with a Zero Waste
to Landfill Report, which documents waste stream activity and ranks
124 domestic and 26 U.K. sites by their level of diversion. It’s a report
card and also a road map to help Cox properties identify how they can
match their peers and elevate their performance. Highlights include:

One Cup at a Time
Small changes in our daily routines
can translate into big environmental
benefits — when scaled across the
entire company. Our One Less Cup
program has removed disposable
cups from break rooms, and across
our facilities employee engagement
activities, like reusable cup swaps,
encourage employees to bring their
own reusable containers. We estimate
One Less Cup removes 2.6 million
disposable cups from the waste stream
and saves $255,000 annually.
