COX CONSERVES
Our Environmental Data Initiative:
Offering a Clearer Picture of Environmental Performance
In a company with 1,200 properties, 40,000 power supplies, 30,000 vehicles and over 22 million
individual transactions in our environmental data platform, identifying all the ways we consume
energy and water can be a challenging endeavor. We are now in year five of an Environmental Data
Initiative that provides us a clear, detailed picture of our inputs, our opportunities to conserve and
our carbon footprint.
An Expanded Commitment to Renewables A More Efficient Fleet
In 2018, we expanded our renewable energy program
with a new, long-term energy supply agreement for
wind energy. Cox Communications Central Region
has contracted with Westar Energy, Inc. to receive
approximately 15,800 MWh per year, over a five-year
period starting in 2020, of wind generation from Westar’s
Soldier Creek Wind Farm. The agreement will result in
nearly 13,000 tons of carbon reduction. Transportation is a major contributor to carbon emissions.
When possible, we employ electric vehicles, fuel-efficient
models and hybrids to reduce our footprint. This resulted in
the purchase of over 450 vehicles with green technology in
2018. GPS technology installed in 5,000 vehicles reduces
travel distance and lowers engine idle time, benefits that
translate into savings of 1 million gallons of fuel annually.
Cox Communications recently deployed 25 bucket trucks
with idle mitigation features that allow service technicians
to operate the bucket with battery power instead of
keeping the truck’s engine running. This significantly
reduces idle time, and the data from the initial pilot
indicates a fuel economy improvement of 27 percent.
We also help employees make their own greener
transportation choices. At our corporate headquarters,
we subsidize travel by public transit, encourage employees
to carpool, offer electric vehicle charging stations and
provide preferred parking for fuel-efficient vehicles.
