That's Fresh November Issue | Page 11

Many people who came on the mayflower were from the Netherlands and the surrounding areas. These people believe they had much influence on the American way. They celebrate their people going to America. They have a non-denominational church service the fourth Thursday of November, there is no turkey but there is cookies and coffee.

Norfolk Island is in between Australia and New Zealand. This country owes its Thanksgiving to U.S. whalers. Started in mid-1890s, this holiday began when an American trader wanted to decorate the church with palm leaves and lemons to try and attract whalers to a thanksgiving service. Even though he passed away before the next celebration, it was continued for many years and even through today. Celebrated on the last Wednesday of November, people bring fruit and vegetables to churches; decorate pews with cornstalks, and altars with flowers.

In conclusion, we hope that you can be a little more thankful this year, and while your aunts and uncles try to bring up your grades or your hair, just start talking about thanksgiving in other countries. Happy Thanksgiving!
