A Camp SAY Story of Two Brothers
"Brian has had the honor of attending Camp SAY for the last two years. To say that it has been beneficial
for him is an enormous understatement. Brian's time at Camp SAY is the absolute highlight of his year. He
wears his Camp SAY shirt every chance he gets and loves it when people ask him about it. He has become
an enthusiastic ambassador for Camp SAY and children who stutter. We were concerned that having a stutter
might cause Brian to struggle with building friendships and avoiding bullies in middle school, as his older
brother did. That was the main reason we wanted so desperately for Brian to go to Camp SAY the summer
before starting middle school.
There is no question that his time at Camp SAY had exactly the positive effect we hoped it would have. He
came home from Camp SAY buoyant and proud, and burst into middle school with so much confidence that he
easily gained both friends and fans. When he had to repeat an oral presentation to several groups of people,
the teachers and students were so proud of how well he was doing that they went and gathered additional
teachers and the SLP therapist who had nothing to do with the class to come witness his glory. Brian told me
recently that when he reads in his creative writing class, he usually gets applause when he finishes. He was so
proud that people truly appreciate what he has to say, instead of losing interest if it takes him awhile to say it.
There is no question in my mind that Brian's time at Camp SAY has drastically improved his experience in
school and in life. Now our younger son, Jonathan, is experiencing some of the same challenges Brian had at
his age. Brian is the one who came to me and suggested that it would be good for Jonathan to go to Camp
SAY with him. He knows what Camp SAY has done for him, and he wants that for his brother as well. Jonathan
and Brian are strong and sweet and kind-hearted. Thank you for all you do for the children who flourish with
the help of Camp SAY."
