younger lady who could pass as a daughter and looked like someone with minimal education. You could take her for a classic village girl married to a city man much older than her. She knew almost nothing about living in the city and so it reflected on their children but her husband wasn't bothered.
It was later when we moved to a different part of the city and met another family who knew the travails of my former neighbour that everything began to make sense to me. It was indeed a horrible and sad story.
My former neighbour had in his earlier years got an overseas scholarship, eventually finishing a PhD from a North American university. He married a woman there and had 4 kids with her. He then thought it wise to come back home with his young family and so they came, not knowing tragedy was before them.
One day, he pulled over his vehicle (with wife and 4 kids in it) and walked out for something when suddenly a truck ran into the vehicle killing all five people! And so our man was left with nothing, his wife and children all gone in the twinkling of an eye. It was in hearing this distressing report I understood his eccentric behaviour; the man was traumatized for the coming decades. But a lonely man needs company, and having a family is a good way to give you one, that explains how he got his young wife and new family.
