COMFORT AND QUALITY HELP PATIENTS TO HEAL AT THE REBA MCENTIRE® CENTER Courtesy Texoma Medical Center FOR REHABILITATION A t the Reba McEntire® Center for Rehabilitation patients begin their journey back to health in a beautiful, home-like setting. Here, an entire team, including rehab nurses, occupational, speech and physical therapists, dedicates itself to helping patients reach the highest level of independence possible. These patients have suffered debilitating illness or injury, such as stroke, significant trauma, spinal cord injury or total joint replacement. A Personalized Program When a patient starts rehabilitation, the multidisciplinary “Reba Rehab” team assesses his or her abilities and limitations. Together, team members develop an individualized plan of care, focused on meeting the patient’s specific needs and goals. “No matter what the diagnosis, we tailor the plan to each patient,” says Katherine Ellis, MD, Reba Rehab Medical Director. “We stay in contact with patients’ physicians and closely monitor progress throughout their stay.” Family-Centered Rehabilitation The rehabilitation program’s philosophy encourages family members to participate in therapy. They’re also included in discussions about discharge planning. “It’s important for family members to be involved,” says Dr. Ellis. “Chances are a close relative will be a caregiver, so education is a part of the patient’s successful recovery.” The Advantages of Aquatic Therapy Reba Rehab is the only rehabilitation center in the local area with a handicapped-accessible heated indoor pool, including an area for hydrotherapy. “Because gravity is eliminated in water, patients can move more freely,” says Dr. Ellis. “Through aquatic exercises the muscles become stronger and help patients gain mobility that stays with them.” A Smooth Transition Home Patients have access to an on-site transitional apartment that offers real-life practice during their stay. Individual therapy takes place seven days a week and includes family members, so everyone is well prepared for the patient’s discharge. These Services Enhance Rehabilitation at Reba Rehab Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) therapists encourage improvement of motor skills through hands-on assistance. Ampcare Effective Swallowing Protocol (ESP™) ESP uses therapeutic electrical stimulation for the treatment of dysphagia (swallowing difficulty). This treatment, in conjunction with a custom exercise program, helps restore swallowing and prevents food from entering the patient’s airway. The WalkAide® System This assists in lifting the foot for individuals who experience foot drop after an injury to their central nervous system. Virtual Reality Assist Program The Virtual Omni™ aids patients by allowing them to perform rehabilitative exercises in a virtual environment.
