Port Lavaca
BIRDING THE CALHOUN LOOP
Osprey by Yathin S Krishnappa
Great Egret
Birding has never been bigger in Port
Lavaca, the county seat for Calhoun
County, than it is now. With the recent
acquisition of more than 23,000 acres for the
purpose of creating two new wildlife habitat
conservation parks, it goes to reason that Port
Lavaca has earned the title of Birding Capital of
the Texas Coast.
Some wonderful birding can be found on the
Calhoun Loop. Our feathered Winter Texans
will be here until the end of March before they
start their journey back up north and if you’re
“in the loop” you’ll be able to spot many different varieties to add to your birding list.
