FEATURES: INSTALLATION
The main system in the hall
comprises 32 PN102LAR array
loudspeakers, con gured as four
arrays of eight cabinets each,
90-degrees apart. The arrays
are positioned on each corner
of a centrally- own block which
houses four large screens, so
that spectators on all four sides
of the hall can have a close up
view of the action. Additional lls
are provided by four PN121-series
two-way cabinets, as well as ve
ST4 three-way systems and a pair of
CFX151 boxes. Four DR18-2 and two
PN112SUB subwoofers provide low
frequency reinforcement.
‘The PN102 line arrays were
selected for their accurate and
even coverage pattern, providing
consistent coverage to every seat in
the hall,’ says Daikyung Vascom’s
CEO Patrick Han. ‘Rhaon (Renkus-

with Daikyung Vascom, Sinwoo’s
Byung-Sun Ahn designed a
system that would be optimal for
the space. The team used EASE
acoustic prediction software to
map the room and de ne its sound
qualities. ‘We carefully carried out
acoustic simulation of the room,
so we didn’t really encounter any
large problems,’ says Mr Ahn. ‘This
was the rst time I’ve worked with
Renkus-Heinz; after some evaluation
of other brands I thought it would
be the most suitable system for the
hall. I checked the speci cations
and references of the Renkus-Heinz
speakers, and when I simulated
them to t the space I got very good
results. The actual performance
of the speakers was very close to
what we’d predicted with EASE. I’m

control was another important factor
in selecting the system, enabling
networked DSP control over the
entire system.‘
As for Ansan Urban Corporation’s
Mr Kim, he is of the opinion that
the speakers offer the best possible
functionality for concert sound,
providing high SPLs when required.
‘Once we are able to put on concerts
here, the system will prove itself as
really good for this kind of event,
while also being able to provide
intelligibility and clarity when the
hall is being used for our sporting
events,’ he says.

Actual building work began in early
2013 following some meetings
between Mr Ahn and the building
contractors. Mr Ahn’s primary
concern was safety. ‘The ceiling of
the gymnasium is very high, around
20m, so I needed to ensure that
my team of installers would be safe
while working so high,’ he says.
Mr Ahn didn’t need to make any
major modi cations to the room;
however the upper section of the
walls, adjoining the ceiling, were
originally lined with gypsum, which
was creating too much re ection in
the room. To solve this problem, Mr

Ahn has replaced this with an upper
section of acoustic tiling.
Flexibility was the keyword when
it came to designing the space,
which will be hosting a wide variety
of events. Permanent seats are
available in the upper part of the
hall, while bleacher-style seating
along the hall’s two longer walls
is retractable and can be folded
back to the walls to accommodate
more people. A stage can be
constructed at the far end of the
hall for large concerts. When being
used in this con guration, temporary
seating can be set up on the oor
of the gymnasium, and a total
of around 3,000 people can be
accommodated.
A control room overlooking the
main hall has been installed with
an Avid Venue console and Genelec
monitoring. ‘The client chose the
Venue because it’s in use in another
building in Ansan, and so we are
familiar with it, and we trust it,’
says Mr Kim. ‘I also like the Venue’s
multipurpose functionality which will
suit the room and the many different
events we will host here.’ The control
room has also been installed with a
pair of Genelec 8040 APM monitors,
and Aphex PE232MK2 and DBQzero have also been supplied.
A smaller room downstairs in
the basement of the building is
being used for other sports such
as badminton and volleyball, and
here, Daikyung Vascom has installed
some of its own-range Vascom
speakers, the best-selling SRI828.
Eight of the models have been
installed, with four along each of the
room’s long walls. These will be used
for music played during sporting
events and for vocal applications.
The room can accommodate an
audience of 200. A further eight

installed into multipurpose and
weightlifting rooms in the sports
facility.
‘Our Vascom speakers are very
popular in Korea, especially for
government projects,’ says Mr Yun.
‘This is down to the stability of the
products, and the fact the brand is
well known in the country. It also
gives both our private and public
sector clients the opportunity to
invest in a local brand. It’s a very
reasonable investment compared
with foreign brands.’
Daikyung Vascom also provided
more of its own-brand equipment
including VEP-816RA CD players,
a large selection of wireless
microphones and mic stands and

functionality. The signs are positive
that the new sporting venue will
contribute to a successful and
uplifting Asian Games later this year,
providing a panacea that South
Korea needs.
