NEWPRODUCTS A-ZCONTENTS The QL5 console Yamaha continues console legacy with QL Series Highly anticipated range of compact digital consoles builds on success of CL Series, adding built-in Dugan Automixing and more YAMAHA IS once again adding to its long history within the digital console market, having followed the success of its recent CL Series models with the QL Series, a new two-strong range of compact but highly featured desks. Described by the manufacturer as ‘inheriting the performance and functionality’ of the CL series, the two desks are aimed squarely at small to medium-sized applications. Moreover, they include a number of key features likely to appeal to that market segment, not least built-in Dugan auto mixing, redundant audio networking, and a fully customisable surface. Of the two, the QL1 is the more compact offering, with 32 mono and eight stereo mix channels, while the QL5 incorporates 64 mono and eight stereo mix channels. According to the manufacturer, the new mixers achieve ‘outstanding audio purity from input to output’ courtesy of internal processors such as the Portico 5033/5043, which was created in cooperation with Rupert Neve. All of the effects and EQ processing capability in the CL series have also been included in the QL consoles. Both of the desks feature 16 mix and eight matrix output busses, as well as ample local I/O comprising 32-in/16-out on the QL5, and 16-in/8-out on the QL1. The built-in automatic mixing functionality from Dan Dugan Sound Design is also likely to be seen as a signi cant selling point, streamlining the production process in conferences, or in environments with multiple speakers. Other signi cant features include portto-port routing via built-in R series inputs/ outputs that can patch any input port to any output port, allowing each QL console to function as a remote I/O device for any other QL or CL desk. A gain compensation feature allows QL and CL consoles to share inputs without fear of unexpected level changes, and dual MY expansion slots allow processing capability or I/O to be added as required. Physically, a touchscreen display, selected channel controls, and ‘Touch and Turn’ knobs are all onboard alongside a remote mixing and of ine setup capability operated via an iPad or computer. Dante has also been built into the box to enable low latency connectivity with larger systems. The interface provides a 64x64 matrix for the QL5 and 32x32 for the QL1, with both consoles featuring 8-space Premium Rack, 8-space GEQ Rack, 8-space Effects Rack, and one license of Dante Virtual Soundcard. A single QL console is capable of simultaneously controlling up to eight R-series units for a total of 256 inputs. Remote control can also be achieved via an iPad with Yamaha StageMix as well as online/ of ine QL Editor Software for Mac and PC computers. Lastly, the consoles provide two-track recording and playback support via standard USB ash drives, or serious multi-track recording and playback with a DAW such as Steinberg’s Nuendo Live via Dante.
