When a Farm Isn’t Really a Farm When Kevin Smith was looking for a piece of land in the Brookfield area, he wasn’t interested in cattle carrying capacity or crop productivity. What he wanted was a place teeming with deer and turkey, a place where he and his family could camp and enjoy hunting, fishing and each other. And one more thing: “We wanted it to be an investment — a savings account we could use,” he explains. The family’s 72 acres includes 54 acres of timber. It’s remote — just like they wanted it — and it has a good population of deer and turkey with plenty of excellent crappie fishing in the area. “It’s great therapy, a lot better than listening to CNN,” says Kevin who is in corporate sales with YRC Freight in Overland Park. “For us, it’s a family thing. A place we can all enjoy and, hopefully, we’ll pass it down to our sons one day.” There’s still some development work to do and while Kevin might not enjoy that as much as hunting, he’ll enjoy it all the same. He plans to do some deer herd management, plant some fruit trees and do the things that will maximize the family’s enjoyment and the property’s value.
