horse sense and crop insurance
Diversification has long been a means of managing farm risk but there aren’t many operations that are varied quite like
Glendale Farms near Columbia.
In addition to growing corn, soybeans, wheat and hay, Frank and John Glenn also custom feed hundreds of horses, most
for a local veterinarian who specializes in embryo transfer for show animals. And following a long family tradition, the farm
is also home to Glendale Stables, a public training, showing and riding instruction facility featuring American Saddlebreds.
A family farm since the 1850s, Glendale Farms feeds most of the corn and hay they raise to the horses while some of
their soybean crop is grown for seed. The manure from the horse enterprise goes onto the crop ground, which is farmed in
minimum- or no-till systems.
Regardless of whether their harvest is trucked away
or utilized on the farm, severely reduced yields hit them
smack in the pocketbook.
“We regard our crop insurance as backup in case
everything falls apart like it did for us in 2012,” Frank
explains. “It’s just another tool but John and I feel it’s a
very important one in view of the weather extremes that
are possible here in Missouri.”
The Glenns rely on their FCS Financial office in
Columbia and crop insurance specialist Dan Rhoades.
“Dan does a good job,” Frank says. “He
stays on top of everything regarding crop
insurance. We have a lot of things going
on here so it’s great to have someone who knows
what he’s doing, knows what we need, and keeps us
informed.”
Dealing with FCS Financial involves more than just crop insurance for the Glenns, though, and they have come to
appreciate the service they receive and the people they deal with.
“I feel like FCS Financial is there for the farmer,” Frank concludes. “I appreciate that and we appreciate the people at
FCS Financial. Everyone we deal with is helpful and you have the feeling they want to help you be successful.”
