Bridging the gap between science and application
show how to ensure suf?cient stability
in several activities. Don’t get hung up
on “the core” unless you want to be an
“average expert.” Let’s kick this up to the
highest level.
Q. Can you provide us with more
myths and realities of the back?
A. There are many myths. I teach a
36-hour clinical course on this, so again,
it is dif?cult to pull out a couple—but
here are some teasers. Some of the “hot”
issues at the moment: the importance of
the transverse abdominis. I will show how
some people have completely misinterpreted the Australian approach and are
causing dysfunction in athletes’ backs.
Another is in the development of power in
the back—power being force (or angular
torque) multiplied by velocity (or angular
velocity). Power in the back must be low
for both injury avoidance and for ultimate performance. The power must be
developed in the hips, knees, shoulders,
etc. So if the back torque is high the
velocity must be low or if the velocity is
high the torque must be low. High spine
power will ensure damage.
Many myths surround the use of some
training machines and popular ?tness
fads. Too many athletes are being ruined
at the high school and collegiate levels by
poor approaches. Many of the Russian
approaches of three and four decades ago
were effective, yet are still relatively
unknown in the west except by a few elite
people. I will present evidence to justify
these opinions.
