Education in Fragile
and Conflictaffected States
Education is vital in responding to unrest in fragile
and conflict-affected states (FCAS), especially for the
more than one billion children living in countries
devastated by violence. Since 2009, more than 30
states have experienced a pattern of targeted attacks
on schools, teachers and students. At the same time,
some state and non-state groups can use education to
exacerbate conflict and foster deep societal divisions.
